Since Adobe released the first public PDF Reference in 1993, a number of PDF utilities and libraries, supporting all kinds of languages and platforms, have been made available to users and developers alike. However, support for Adobe's technology has lagged in Java application development. And this is curious because PDF documents tend to be a popular way of storing and interchanging information when dealing with enterprise information systems - an application domain that Java technology is particularly well suited to. Yet it seems that, until recently, mature, capable PDF support wasn't readily available to Java applications developers."

Here is a much-revised and extended draft of the sparkline chapter for Beautiful Evidence (2005).
The chapter is now 18 pages long and probably will require a high speed connection. Images that are blurry on the computer screen are crystal clear on paper. Stephen Malinowski, Brad Paley, and Bonnie Scranton helped with several important graphics. New examples or helpful comments much appreciated"

In addition, JDK 5.0 includes the Java Monitoring and Management Console (JConsole) tool. It uses the extensive instrumentation of the Java virtual machine to provide information on performance and resource consumption of applications running on the Java platform using Java Management Extension (JMX) technology.
The article describes how JConsole can be used to observe information about an application running on the Java platform. The article first gives an overview of the J2SE 5.0 monitoring and management architecture and how JConsole plugs into the architecture. It then describes how to use JConsole to access several core monitoring and management functionalities provided by the Java platform including:
* Detect low memory
* Enable or disable GC and class loading verbose tracing
* Detect deadlocks
