Peer Pressure » Eclipsing Firefox: "Okay, so I’m spoiled, but what I want is Eclipse (IBM’s amazing Java-based IDE), but inside Firefox. So I’m in my browser with the development sidebar open and displaying the full hierarchy of all my project files. I click on a file and it opens inside Firefox’s built-in code editor (were such a beast to exist), checking it out of my source control system if necessary. "

Elixir Studios to close following cancellation of key project

Closure blamed on lack of room for small independent developers wanting to work on innovative and original ideas

There are still original titles being produced within the industry - but sometimes they lack something in terms of execution or marketability e.g. The Great Art Race

There are plenty of RTS titles worth a look at the moment though,
Hot on the heels of Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and LOTR The Battle for Middle Earth came World of Warcraft MMO - which everyone tells me is awesome.

An announcement on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault - the first Expansion pack to Dawn of War - not entirely unexpected!

Then there are some more games to take a look at:

What if I offered you a handful of code that could generate inline sparkgraphs without library code? Presenting Bumpspark."

Here is a much-revised and extended draft of the sparkline chapter for Beautiful Evidence (2005).

The chapter is now 18 pages long and probably will require a high speed connection. Images that are blurry on the computer screen are crystal clear on paper. Stephen Malinowski, Brad Paley, and Bonnie Scranton helped with several important graphics. New examples or helpful comments much appreciated"

Beyond Tables: Dealing with the Convergence of Relational and XML Data: "Beyond Tables: Dealing with the Convergence of Relational and XML Data
Developers are under increasing pressure to work with heterogeneous information. The advent of XML provided a data representation suitable for both regular (database tables) and irregular content, and was a significant step forward, but representation alone is not enough. We need a powerful standardized method for querying that data as well. XQuery fulfills that need.

April 28, 2005 ~ 12:14

Mozilla turned on the new HTML tag, so I expect Firefox 1.1 to have it.

is a was first introduced by Apple in Safari for their implementation of the upcoming 'DashBoard' in MacOX 10.4 (aka Tiger) and now it's part of new, non-W3C effort to improve HTML for richer client-side web applications. It introduces the notion of an 'image you can paint on' programmatically. People have been doing this with applets, then shockwave, then flash, then svg, now this. The trend is clear: smaller, leaner, faster to startup, more integrated in your environment (means real event interoperation with the page!), easier for DHTML designers to understand.

This leads me to think that is going to be huge. By the time the new Adobe+Macromedia colossus decide the faith of flash+SVG, this little HTML tag will slowly make both suboptimal for many simple tasks they are used for today."

Getting started with JDeveloper extension development

Ask any serious Java developer what are the tools in his arsenal and coffee will sure be one of them. Coffee is what keeps the developer's eyes open after hours of staring at his code trying to figure out why it doesn't work. I was surprised to discover that JDeveloper - although being a comprehensive Java IDE - is missing support for making coffee cups straight out of the IDE. I figured out that this could be a helpful feature that will attract many new developers to use JDeveloper. So I decided to go ahead and add coffee making capabilities to JDeveloper."

Oracle10g SQL Time-series Tuning

Oracle10g SQL Time-series Tuning: "Oracle10g SQL Time-series Tuning

by Donald K. Burleson

This article is a brief overview of SQL tuning in Oracle10g, with a focus on the new 10g SQL tuning features. The main new features of SQL tuning in Oracle10g include the following:

* Oracle10g now automatically collects and refreshes schema statistics using the dbms_stats package, and histogram collection is now easily automated with dbms_stats
* One common cause of sub-optimal SQL is missing materialized view and indexes, especially function-based indexes. The SQLTuning Advisor and SQLAccess Advisor provide an easy method for identifying and tuning SQL with sub-optimal execution plans.
* SQL Profiles are a great improvement of Optimizer Plan Stability (stored outlines).
* The new dba_hist tables contain a wealth of historical information about historical SQL execution statistics.
* Time-series analysis of object usage within SQL can give us important insights into holistic tuning for SQL statements."

Using JConsole to Monitor Applications

By Mandy Chung, December 2004

The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 release provides comprehensive monitoring and management support. It not only defines the management interfaces for the Java virtual machine, but also provides out-of-the-box remote monitoring and management on the Java platform and of applications that run on it. In addition, JDK 5.0 includes the Java Monitoring and Management Console (JConsole) tool. It uses the extensive instrumentation of the Java virtual machine to provide information on performance and resource consumption of applications running on the Java platform using Java Management Extension (JMX) technology.

The article describes how JConsole can be used to observe information about an application running on the Java platform. The article first gives an overview of the J2SE 5.0 monitoring and management architecture and how JConsole plugs into the architecture. It then describes how to use JConsole to access several core monitoring and management functionalities provided by the Java platform including:

* Detect low memory
* Enable or disable GC and class loading verbose tracing
* Detect deadlocks
* Control the log level of any loggers in an application
* Access OS resources—Sun's platform extension
* Manage an application's Managed Beans (MBeans)"
